The importance of keeping The York Vaults alive cannot be overstated

by Robert Jackson of the YORK FORUM
The York Vaults was and still has the potential to be one of the just three independent music and cultural centres in the entirety of York, a city with a population exceeding 200,000. The importance of keeping The York Vaults alive cannot be overstated, as it stands as a beacon for creativity and community engagement within our vibrant city.

The York Vaults is not just a venue; it is a cornerstone of cultural expression, a place where local artists have blossomed and where people from all walks of life have come together to celebrate music, arts, and culture. Its closure would not only rob the city of its historical legacy in the music scene but also deny future generations the opportunity to experience live performances in an intimate, independent venue.

Supported by numerous residents who have been vital contributors to York's live music scene for over 50 years, our plan is to revive The York Vaults, transforming it into a thriving arts, cultural, and community hub that can gain national recognition.

We believe the venue can and should become a community asset, a space that nurtures artistic talent and provides a welcoming environment for cultural events. The essence of York’s identity is steeped in its rich artistic and musical heritage. Losing another independent venue would mean losing a part of that soul.

Therefore, we urge the City Council and other stakeholders to recognize The York Vaults as a crucial part of York’s cultural tapestry that deserves to be preserved and celebrated. We call upon everyone who values music, culture, and community to support this cause.

Let's save The York Vaults from the brink, ensuring it remains a vital cultural hub for our city. Sign the petition and help us bring The York Vaults back to life as the centre for arts and expression it deserves to be.
